Evading the Lyth bound in hybrid natural inflation

چکیده
Generically, the gravitational-wave or tensor-mode contribution to the primordial curvature spectrum of inflation is tiny if the field range of the inflaton is much smaller than the Planck scale. We show that this pessimistic conclusion is naturally avoided in a rather broad class of small-field models. More specifically, we consider models where an axionlike shift symmetry keeps the inflaton potential flat (up to nonperturbative cosine-shaped modulations), but inflation nevertheless ends in a waterfall regime, as is typical for hybrid inflation. In such hybrid natural inflation scenarios (examples are provided by Wilson line inflation and fluxbrane inflation), the slow-roll parameter can be sizable during an early period (relevant for the cosmic microwave background spectrum). Subsequently, quickly becomes very small before the tachyonic instability eventually terminates the slow-roll regime. In this scenario, one naturally generates a considerable tensor-mode contribution in the curvature spectrum, collecting nevertheless the required amount of e-foldings during the final period of inflation. While nonobservation of tensors by Planck is certainly not a problem, a discovery in the mediumto long-term future is realistic.

Notes on inflation and the Lyth bound
• The tensor-to-scalar ratio measures (up to order-one constants) the distance that the inflaton field φ traveled in field space during inflation. For detectable r, this implies ∆φ ∼ MPl. This is known as the “Lyth bound.” From the effective field theory standpoint, this is surprising, since Planck-suppressed operators are expected to spoil the flatness of the potential. Thus, this suggests a m...
متن کاملMore varieties of hybrid inflation.
It is pointed out that hybrid inflation can be implemented with the inflaton field rolling away from the origin instead of towards it. This ‘inverted’ hybrid inflation has a spectral index n < 1, in contrast with ordinary hybrid inflation which has n ∼ 1, so a measured value of n substantially different from 1 would distinguish the two. Other generalisations of hybrid inflation are also conside...
متن کاملThe Lyth Bound Revisited
We investigate the Lyth relationship between the tensor-scalar ratio, r, and the variation of the inflaton field, ∆φ, over the course of inflation. For inflationary models that produce at least 55 e-folds of inflation, there is a correlation between r and ∆φ as anticipated by Lyth, but the scatter around the relationship is huge. However, for inflationary models that satisfy current observation...
متن کاملHilltop Inflation
We study ‘hilltop’ inflation, in which inflation takes place near a maximum of the potential. Viewed as a model of inflation after the observable Universe leaves the horizon (observable inflation) hilltop inflation is rather generic. If the potential steepens monotonically, observable hilltop inflation gives a tiny tensor fraction (r ∼ 0.002). The usual F and D-term models may easily be transmu...
متن کاملSub-Planckian two-field inflation consistent with the Lyth bound
The BICEP2 observation of a large tensor-to-scalar ratio, r = 0.20 −0.05, implies that the inflaton φ in single-field inflation models must satisfy φ ∼ 10MPl in order to produce sufficient inflation. This is a problem if interaction terms suppressed by the Planck scale impose a bound φ . MPl. Here we consider whether it is possible to have successful subPlanckian inflation in the case of two-fi...
